Eve Ensler is a playwright, performer and activist. She is the award-winning author of "The Vagina Monologues," which has been published in 45 languages and performed in more than 130 countries. Ensler has devoted her life to stopping violence, envisioning a planet in which women will be free to thrive, rather than merely survive. "The Vagina Monologues" is based on Ensler's interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace the piece celebrates women's' sexuality and strength.
She is also the founder of V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women, which has raised $70 million and educated millions though art and activism. V-Day was named one of Worth Magazine's "100 Best Charities" in 2001 and Marie Claire's "Top Ten Charities" in 2006.
Ensler released her first major work written exclusively for the "Printed Page" in 2006 - "Insecure At Last," was a timely and urgent look at how we live today, the drastic measures taken to keep us safe and how we can truly experience freedom by letting go of the deceptive notion of vigilant "protection." Ensler's latest book, "I Am An Emotional Creature," was released in February 2010. She will direct the film adaptation of her play, "Necessary Targets," in 2010.
Ensler has written numerous articles for Glamour Magazine, Marie Claire, Huffington Post and Utne Reader, as well as a regular column in O Magazine. She has won many awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship in Playwriting and an Obie. She has a number of honorary degrees as well.
