Everyone We Know Is Beautiful!*
by Rachel Silver

On the evening of November 15th, Philadelphia University and A Chance to Heal will host the region’s first fashion show and design competition celebrating a diversity of shape, size, height, complexion and age. This revolutionary event, entitled “Body Diversity: Everyone We Know is Beautiful”, will take place at Philadelphia University (www.philau.edu).

Philadelphia University students will create innovative designs using styles, patterns and colors that compliment real bodies. “This is a ground-breaking opportunity for young designers and consumers to recognize that clothes can look great and fit right no matter what our size, shape, color or age,” says Ivy Silver, co-founder and president of A Chance to Heal.

On the night of the show, judges from Victoria's Secret, Lane Bryant, Evoluer Consultants, the Philadelphia Inquirer, TJ Maxx and Joan Shepp will award cash prizes based on creativity, wearability, construction and design.

“Fashion does not need to know size, age or ethnicity. Being beautiful is about celebrating you,” says fashion show judge Nora Gomez of Lane Bryant.

Tickets to the event, which will benefit A Chance to Heal, are available online at achancetoheal.org or by calling 215-885-2420. A Chance to Heal is a regional non-profit dedicated to preventing eating disorders through education and early diagnosis.

Before and after the event, A Chance to Heal will hold educational programming for students on topics such as preventing and recognizing eating disorders, self-esteem, nutrition and how the fashion industry potentially affects body image. Armed with this information, students will be better equipped to create fashions for all body types and promote positive body image in their lifelong work.

This event will challenge industry standards of beauty and encourage attendees to adopt a healthier view of their own bodies. The hope is that this healthy body image event will raise awareness about body image and prevent potential eating disorders.

Rachel Silver will be a panelist in the Young Women’s Program “Be the Change” session.
